Gwen Laine and Lorelei Schott share a sense of time, its passage and the way that memory impacts the present. Both use natural elements and process to demonstrate the character of their pieces while recalling places and atmospheres of a deeply personal nature.

Lorelei leaves canvas out in the garden to be imprinted by the weather and whatever has accumulated on it, beginning the composition utilizing nature’s random selection and working
into the surface from there.

Gwen buries the images she photographs under images that she re-photographs and repeats this process again until time has erased all but the most intuitive memory of what preceded.

Their works are layered journals that unite the moment with past awareness.

Through viewing 16,000 photographs, Gwen Laine’s images have caught the eye of Black & White Magazine. She is honored with a 4-page spread, which will be released in June, presenting a selection of her photographs from her portfolio. Out of nearly 1000 applicants, Gwen Laine is awarded with an Excellence Award, along with 14 other photographers. It may be no surprise to some that Laine’s work was selected in B&W’s portfolio contest. Her unique method in the current show at the Sandy Carson Gallery, Laine triple-exposes her film. This random process makes the images take on a surprisingly controlled composition, which emphasizes multiple forms of light and shadow. The unusual structure of the photographs adds to their dramatic appearance.
