February 29th - April 5th, 2008
EXPOSED is an exhibition of photographic works by eleven artists who are united by the level of their craft but very divergent in their approach to the medium. Marc Berghaus, Peter de Lory, Jeff Hersch, Doug Rhinehart and Michael Zansky all take very different looks at landscape. They are sometimes straightforward views of dramatic vistas in black and white or in the case of Zansky’s images, industrial sites that have been distorted through optical lenses, photographed in color and over painted with resin. Rusty Scruby completely deconstructs an image by reproducing it hundreds of time and cutting it to pieces and reconstructing it as a shaped facsimile of the original image.
Andrea Modica, internationally known for her studies of families that she collaborates with for years, creates deeply moving psychological, psychodramas using her subjects as actors and their environments as stages. Jenny Gummersall and Gwen Laine also stage their images. Jenny uses a plastic toy Appaloosa horse and places it in landscapes, as hood ornaments and in juxtaposition to Barbie or a Chinese terracotta horse. Laine takes an interior and the light that penetrates it during the day and creates an installation utilizing objects of memory and personal association. Mark Berghaus may shoot an abandoned interior, stark exterior or compose his own drama with nude figures and dice.
EXPOSED moves from the classic to the completely unconventional and back again.
As a part of Denver's "Month of Photography," this exhibition has been assembled to coincide with the Society For Photographic Educators Conference and will host an opening for them and the public on Friday March 14 from 6-9pm at the Sandy Carson Gallery in Denver.
