MICHAEL ZANSKY:

THE SUPREME COURT SERIES

In vast terrains obsessively carved and reworked, Michael Zansky addresses a sort of Orwellian mindset that we are never alone. Wherever we go, and regardless of the circumstances, we are more or less controlled by a system of rules and laws, whether they are moral, emotional, or physical. But in Zansky’s hands, those underlying guides become anxieties, subconscious and visceral - a place where we are tempted by our limitations.

I am also reminded of the textbook images of Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, where we get this bird’s eye view of a changed earth. That same sense of theater appears in Zansky’s offerings - complete with vistas, lighting and illusion - making his message more real as we enter and become absorbed in his topographical vision

More specifically, Zansky uses optics in his sculptural pieces, distorting and focusing lenses that concentrate our point of view. This is the moment where we become more aware of the power and weight of the unconscious, and we are reminded that we are being observed, even judged.
