Gwen Laine was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, and currently lives in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. She is the youngest of four children and the only girl.

From early in life, Laine was exposed to the art-making process as both her grandmothers were artists -- one a painter and the other a photographer. She received a BFA from the University of Colorado, where she studied both photography and sculpture. Much of Laine's work is influenced by her family life, particularly her experience as a female surrounded by males.
